LCO Live Vol. 5: Samuel Barber Adagio for Strings

by Lowell Chamber Orchestra

/
1.

about

Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings originated as the second movement of his string quartet, and has now become his most popular piece - you have heard it in numerous movies, arranged for a number of ensembles, and perhaps in its very famous techno version. And it was this piece, thanks to conductor Arturo Toscanini, that catapulted Barber to fame: Barber and his partner Giancarlo Menotti met the famous conductor, who promised to play one of Barber’s pieces. Barber sent Toscanini two pieces, the Essay for Orchestra and the Adagio for Strings. Toscanini returned both pieces by mail without comment. Barber was distraught, but he later found out that Toscanini was going to perform both pieces, and he did not need the scores any more because he had memorized them.
