about

Composed around 1894 for double wind quintet and first performed by the Parisian Société des Instruments a Vent, the Divertissement Op. 36 shows Émile Bernard’s masterful knowledge of orchestration. The rather small instrumentation, particularly striking for its total lack of strings, makes for a very portable ensemble that provides the voicing to provide a full sound and masterful counterpoint to produce a thorough thematic development. Bernard did not write much, but this work remains among his most popular, having been played at least three times by the Longy Club of Boston between 1900 and 1905.
