LCO Live Vol. 2: Arnold Friedman Postlude

by Lowell Chamber Orchestra

about

Postlude (2003) was commissioned for the 25th and final concert of an annual Clarke Tanner Memorial Concert. The concert series had raised funds for a music scholarship in memory of the prodigiously talented young composer and pianist. The title reflects the work’s role in concluding the series, and as a celebration of Tanner’s life. The opening measures present four fragmentary ideas in turn: soft sustained chords in the upper strings, an angular pizzicato line in the bass and cellos, upward-rushing scales in the woodwinds, and fanfare fragments in the trumpet and horns. Those ideas combine and develop into all of Postlude’s themes. The piece has two main sections. The first approximates a classical sonata form with two similar build-ups. A sudden calm then launches a set of variations in the manner of a baroque chaconne. The variations rise from the low instruments through the woodwinds, to a solo for the trumpet. A soft reflection of the work’s opening concludes Postlude.

Composer and cellist Arnold Friedman is Professor of Composition and at the Berklee College of Music in Boston and chaired Berklee's Composition Department from 2012-16. He previously served on the faculty of the University of North Texas, where he earned his Doctor of Musical Arts, and at Western Oregon University. He teaches summer courses at John Cabot University in Rome, Italy. Dr. Friedman is currently cellist, composer, and arranger for the Friedman-Melde Cello and Piano Duo. The Duo has performed throughout New England, and in Italy, including the Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi. Friedman’s orchestral cello performances include the Dallas Opera and the Boston Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra, and contemporary chamber music with Boston's microtonal ensemble Notariotous, and Dinosaur Annex. He was the director of the University of North Texas Nova Ensemble. Friedman is frequently invited as a pre-concert lecturer throughout New England. Dr. Friedman's recent compositions have been performed at the Festival of New American Music in Sacramento, and for the Cathedral of St. Thomas More near Washington DC. His Concerto Grosso and Mass of St. Francis were composed for youth orchestras and choirs in Rome, Italy. His pop musical arrangements for orchestra are recognized for their color and virtuosity.
