about

Béla Bartók was one of the first ethnomusicologists, traveling extensively through Europe and collecting folk music from many regions, which then he used often for didactic purposes. The Romanian Folk Dances is a selection of Romanian folk melodies that Bartók heard played on fiddle or “caval” (an end-blown flute), and later harmonized. Bartók’s work, originally written for piano, can be seen as an homage to the music of Romania, especially in the way he captures the different moods of each dance and enhances the melodies’ harmonization. The orchestral adaptation you will hear tonight, by the composer himself, uses the classical instruments in an unusual way to stylize the typical Romanian ensembles’ sounds. This work has become very popular in numerous other adaptations by musicians worldwide.
